1. Explain in your own words what discourse study is. To answer the question: first examine the three texts (under the activity 1a 1b and 1c) in the book “Discourse Analysis” by David Nunan (page 1-2).

Answer:

Discourse study is the interpretation about

spoken, written texts, and signed languages. In discourse also involving about verbal and non verbal materials. Discourse study is closed with the text form and it is more than the meaning from the written or spoken texts but involving communicative event.  Discourse study is related with the humanities and social sciences.  So, discourse study is analyze all about the spoken or written from the people involving text form, grammar, coherent in each sentence, the meaning from individual and how the situational when a texts is analyzed.

2. Choose one short article in English from a newspaper and find the cohesion and deixis used within the article. Make the interpretation of the meaning of each kind of cohesion and deixis throughout the context of the text.

KPK vows to send Mochtar to prison right away

Following the Supreme Court ruling that sentenced former Bekasi mayor Mochtar Mohammad to six years in prison and Rp 300 million (US$30,000) in fines, Corruption Eradication Commission prosecutor I Ketut Sumardhana said that he would put the ruling into effect immediately.

“We are now waiting for the official copy of the ruling in order to send him to prison right away,” Sumardhana told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Mochtar had been the first KPK defendant ever to be acquitted.

The court announced on Wednesday that it sentenced Mochtar to six years in prison and fined him Rp 300 million with the alternative of serving an additional six months in jail should he fail to pay the fines.

The panel of judges, which comprised justice Djoko Sarwoko and two ad-hoc corruption appellate court judges Krisna Harahap and Leo Hutagalung, also ordered Mochtar to pay Rp 693 million in restitution to the state.

In November last year, the Bandung Corruption Court in West Java cleared Mochtar of all of four counts of corruption, including rigging the selection process for the Adipura city cleanliness award to make Bekasi the winner in 2010 and an attempt to bribe the city council to approve the 2010 budget.

Many questioned the verdict, particularly when it emerged that one of the judges, Ramlan Comel, was a former lawyer and businessman who himself was sentenced to two years in jail on corruption charges before his own acquittal at an appellate court. (dic)
